Top Ten Tuesday: Favorite Couples in Literature

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the lovely Jana at The Artsy Reader Girl.

In honor of Valentine's Day tomorrow, this week's theme is a Love Freebie! Meaning, those of us who participate in the Top Ten Tuesday blog hop get to pick our own topic. Being that I'm a sucker for romance in literature, but not so much books that fall solely in the romance category, I'm sharing with you my top ten literary couples.

1. Pip & Estella - Great Expectations by Charles Dickens

"I have no hope that I shall ever call you mine, Estella. I am ignorant what may become of me very soon, how poor I may be, or where I may go. Still, I love you. I have loved you since I first saw you in this house.”
2. Magnus Bane & Alec Lightwood - The Mortal Instruments Series by Cassandra Clare
“Still I pictured having you for fifty, sixty more years. I thought I might be ready then to let you go. But it's you, and I realize now that I won't be anymore ready to lose you then than I am right now. Which is not at all.”

3. Percy Jackson & Annabeth Chase - The Percy Jackson Series by Rick Riordan

“It's okay,” he said. “We're together.” He didn't say you're okay, or we're alive. After all they'd been through over the last year, he knew that the most important thing was that they were together. She loved him for saying that.”

4. Katniss & Peeta - The Hunger Games Series by Suzanne Collins

“You love me. Real or not real?"
I tell him, "Real.”

5. Westley & Buttercup - The Princess Bride by William Goldman

“Westley: Hear this now: I will always come for you.
Buttercup: But how can you be sure?
Westley: This is true love-you think this happens every day?"

6. Evelyn Hugo & Celia St. James - The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

“I have been married seven times, and never once has it felt half as right as this. I think that loving you has been the truest thing about me.”

7. Jacob & Marlena - Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen

“When two people are meant to be together, they will be together. It's fate.”

8. Angrboda & Loki - The Witch's Heart by Genevieve Gornichec

“That's because I love you, and you love me. And even as I speak these words now, they terrify me, but I know them to be true. More than anything else, I know this. And so do you.”

9. Larkyra Bassette & Lord Darius Mekenna - The Song of Forever Rains by E.J. Mellow

“Darius had hated how quickly his heart had beaten in that moment, seeing her there. How it had turned to an aching twist when she’d said his name, the sound like a soft song from her lips.”

10. Mandella & Potter - The Forever War by Joe Haldeman

"So I’m on a relativistic shuttle, waiting for you…. I never found anybody else and I don’t want anybody else. I don’t care whether you’re ninety years old or thirty. If I can’t be your lover, I’ll be your nurse."

Here's the list. My husband and kids' favorites made the list as well because I was interested in what they thought. Interestingly, my kids - 22f & 14m - both said Percy and Annabeth. That must mean they are a great couple!

Did any of your favorite couples make the list? Who am I missing?

Great list, I definitely echo Westley and Buttercup as one of the great literary couples.
